Micro-titer Plate Reader

This is a micro-titer plate, also commonly known as a 96 well plate. This image shows it being loaded into a micro-titer plate reader. The dominate paradigm is that the absorbance of light by the colored substance must be read in each well individually.

Micro-titer Plate Reader Product Focus

While refurbished micro-titer plate readers may sometimes be available for a few thousand dollars on eBay, they tend to be only able to read absorbance in factory determined settings. There will always be moving parts that may break and need to be “refurbished.” Higher end micro-titer plate readers can also measure fluorescence as well as operate in a kinetic moderate in a kinetic mode acquiring images every 5 seconds or so. Because of the requirement to read each well individually, data acquisition is slower than a typical cell phone video recorder. The data acquisition is typically limited to 96 and 384 well plate formats. Despite the hundreds of commercial assay kits for the micro-titer plate reader, we at Ringtail Bio endeavor to build a more versatile instrument for the same price or even less than what is commercially available.

Thin Layer Chromatography

Thin layer chromatography is a technique used to separate different chemicals based on their solubility in a solvent as it migrates up a solid surface, often silica. Shown here are 10 essential oils. Often a second treatment is required to visualize the chemical species.

Thin layer chromatogaphy can also be used to resolve fluorescent compounds. Shown here are some mycotoxins. Again, we at Ringtail Bio endeavor to build a more versatile instrument for the same price or even less than what is commercially available.
